Project Hail Mary, arriving in Italian cinemas on March 19, 2026, stars Ryan Gosling in the new film adaptation of the novel by Andy Weir.
The film Project Hail Mary, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Last Man on Earth, The Lego Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel of the same name, promises to be one of the most ambitious hard science fiction film adaptations of recent years, bringing to the screen a story that combines scientific rigor, astrophysical speculation and extreme survival storytelling.
The screenplay for Project Hail Mary is written by Drew Goddard, who already achieved the difficult task of adapting The Martian while balancing cinematic pacing with scientific storytelling.
The Sun is rapidly losing energy because of an extraterrestrial organism capable of consuming electromagnetic radiation. From this premise, the story develops with rigorous scientific logic into a plot built around technical obstacles, involving resource management, incremental experiments and deductions, while describing alien biology without easy anthropomorphism.
Below is the official synopsis for Project Hail Mary: “Science teacher Ryland Grace wakes up on a spaceship light-years from home, with no memory of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: to solve the mystery of the strange substance causing the Sun to die, using his scientific knowledge and some highly unorthodox ideas to save Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship may save him from having to do it all alone.”
Distribution is handled by Amazon MGM Studios for the United States and Canada, with Sony Pictures Releasing International covering the global market. In Italy, the film will be distributed by Eagle Pictures, with its theatrical release scheduled for March 19, 2026, one day ahead of the U.S. release, set for March 20, 2026.
The film was made with an estimated budget of 150 million dollars and was also shot in IMAX format, a choice designed to enhance its spectacular space sequences and visual effects, offering audiences an immersive experience in premium formats such as Dolby Cinema and 4DX.
