Cyberpunk 2077 Movie: Paramount Enters Night City

Paramount is developing a Cyberpunk 2077 film with CD Projekt Red. The real challenge may be choosing a story without letting the franchise overwhelm it.

A Cyberpunk 2077 movie is in development at Paramount Pictures, with CD Projekt Red involved in production and veteran producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura among the names attached to the live-action project.

Night City is preparing to change screens, although for now Paramount has mainly announced the foundations. There is no director, screenwriter, cast or release date yet, and the central creative question remains unanswered: will the film follow V, or simply use the universe built by CD Projekt Red?

In a fictional city where megacorporations buy bodies, memories, implants, private armies and pieces of identity, the second option would hardly feel radical. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners already demonstrated that Night City can change protagonists without moving the balance of power by an inch.

From disastrous launch to Paramount movie

When Cyberpunk 2077 launched in December 2020, the urgent problem was not how to build a movie franchise but how to make the game function properly across consoles. The technical failures were severe enough for Sony to remove it from the PlayStation Store, an extraordinary decision for a release of that scale. CD Projekt Red entered a cycle of patches, refunds and reputational damage that looked decidedly less futuristic than the world it had created.

Six years later, the picture is nearly reversed. The game has passed 40 million copies sold, while Phantom Liberty has reached 15 million. Updates, systemic overhauls and the Idris Elba-led expansion gradually transformed one of the most controversial launches in recent memory into an intellectual property strong enough to interest a major Hollywood studio.

Between those two moments came Edgerunners. The Studio Trigger anime reached Netflix in 2022 and had a measurable effect on the game: it entered the platform’s Top 10 in numerous countries while Cyberpunk 2077 pushed past 20 million copies. Its lesson was simple but useful. Night City could host another story without forcing viewers to watch the plot of the game retold in front of them.

The Cyberpunk 2077 movie may not need V

The Paramount project is not even the first live-action attempt. In 2023 CD Projekt announced a collaboration with Anonymous Content, the company associated with projects such as True Detective, Mr. Robot, Spotlight and The Revenant, for an original story set in the Cyberpunk universe. The relationship between that project and the new Paramount film has not been publicly clarified.

Nor has Keanu Reeves been announced as Johnny Silverhand, despite the obvious fan interest. The universe does not begin with Johnny or V: it descends from Mike Pondsmith’s tabletop role-playing game and contains decades of corporations, gangs, wars, technologies and characters.

Paramount may therefore face the opposite problem from many game adaptations. The challenge is not how to compress one enormous game into two hours, but which story to select from a world already overflowing with them.

After years spent repairing the game, the next task is more delicate: preventing the franchise from becoming more important than the film before the film has even found its story.
