Communists on Mars? The creative team behind the cult Iron Sky franchise returns with a new satirical science-fiction project titled Deep Red.

Leading this new irreverent sci-fi project are producer Tero Kaukomaa and director Timo Vuorensola, who had already implicitly declared, through the ending of Iron Sky: The Coming Race, their intention to shift their narrative target from Nazis to Communists and set the story on the ultimate Red Planet.

Although it is not directly connected to the Iron Sky universe, the project inherits its grotesque, absurd and openly satirical tone. Deep Red is conceived as a unified trilogy, designed and produced as one major cinematic event.

A Communist techno-dictatorship: Mars ruled by an AI called Deep Red

In the world of Deep Red, a secret Communist colony has occupied Mars since the 1950s, creating a seemingly utopian society that has grown in total isolation from Earth. This very separation from the rest of humanity supposedly made a fully functioning Communist system possible. The story opens in the present day, when an American astronaut crash-lands on the Red Planet and uncovers the hidden colony.

The Martian city is ruled by an authoritarian artificial intelligence called Deep Red, an obvious reference to Google’s DeepMind, which evolved from an old Soviet supercomputer once used to challenge humans at chess. What initially seems like an ideal Marxist dream rapidly becomes a dystopian nightmare: a regime founded on constant surveillance, algorithmic control and the total loss of individual freedom.

The production challenges traditional capitalism: cryptocurrency airdrops and revenue sharing

The production of Deep Red breaks with traditional film-industry models by adopting a financing system based on blockchain, cryptocurrencies and revenue sharing. The project revisits and expands the crowdfunding experience that helped make Iron Sky a success, focusing on direct audience participation. The plan involves issuing up to 20 million tokens worth €1 each, linked not only to the films but to the entire narrative and commercial universe of Deep Red, allowing supporters to share in potential future revenues.

Fundraising will take place in several rounds, designed to finance the different stages of production. An initial phase aims to raise at least €250,000 to produce a promotional trailer and establish the production infrastructure, while a subsequent, much larger round will support the entire trilogy. According to the producers, this tokenised revenue-sharing model reduces dependence on traditional financing, creating a more direct, global and participatory economic ecosystem in which fans become active participants in the project’s success.

The legendary original Iron Sky team reunites to shoot the trilogy as a single event

Above all, the production of Deep Red marks the return of several long-standing collaborators from the Iron Sky franchise, confirming the desire to maintain strong creative continuity. Samuli Torssonen of Energia VFX will supervise the visual effects, while Slovenian art-rock band Laibach is in talks to provide the score, reinforcing the project’s stylistic and provocative identity.

The three films will be made simultaneously as a single epic experience in three chapters, a decision shaped by the experience of Iron Sky, which built a solid global fanbase but suffered from the long gaps between releases. This time the goal is clear: unite the people by guaranteeing a steady dose of hype.
